Four families, three rhythms
Zodiac signs and their elements
Fire, earth, air and water: which signs belong to each element, what the elements mean in astrology, and how they combine with the three modalities.
Zodiac element signs
| Element | Theme | Signs | In brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Initiative and expression | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Fire is the element of enthusiasm, action, courage and creative drive. |
| Earth | Practice and continuity | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Earth is the element of practicality, patience, material security and results. |

Which elements get along?
Traditional astrology pairs the elements in two groups. Fire and air are the active, outward-facing (positive) elements; earth and water are the receptive, inward-facing (negative) ones. Signs within the same group are described as complementary, while signs from different groups need more effort.
| Combination | Traditional reading |
|---|---|
| Fire + air | Complementary: air feeds fire. |
| Earth + water | Complementary: water nourishes earth. |
| Fire + earth | Challenging: speed meets caution. |
| Fire + water | Challenging: impulse meets feeling. |
| Air + earth | Challenging: ideas meet practicality. |
| Air + water | Challenging: logic meets emotion. |
Elements and modalities together
Each element contains one sign of each modality. Combining four elements with three modalities produces exactly twelve signs.
Where the elements come from
The idea of four elements comes from Greek natural philosophy. Empedocles (5th century BCE) described fire, air, water and earth as the roots of all things, and Aristotle linked them to the qualities hot, cold, wet and dry. Hellenistic astrologers such as Ptolemy grouped the signs into four triplicities, which is where the modern fire, earth, air and water signs come from.
