Three rhythms
Cardinal, fixed and mutable zodiac signs
The three modalities of the zodiac, which signs belong to each, and how they relate to the seasons.
| Modality | Theme | Signs | Place in the season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | Beginning and initiating | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | Each cardinal sign starts a season: the equinoxes and solstices. |
| Fixed | Sustaining and concentrating | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | Fixed signs fall in the middle of each season, when it is most established. |
| Mutable | Adapting and transitioning | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | Mutable signs close each season and prepare the change to the next. |
Cardinal zodiac signs
The cardinal signs begin the four seasons: Aries at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox and Capricorn at the December solstice. Astrologers associate them with initiative, leadership and starting things. The word comes from the Latin cardo, “hinge”.
Fixed zodiac signs
The fixed signs sit in the middle of each season, when it is most settled. Astrologers describe Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius as determined, loyal and persistent, and also as the most resistant to change. The four fixed signs correspond to the bull, lion, eagle (an old symbol of Scorpio) and man seen in much religious art.
Mutable zodiac signs
The mutable signs close each season and prepare the change to the next. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are described as flexible, adaptable and versatile, and sometimes as inconsistent. Older texts call them “double-bodied” signs, which fits the twins of Gemini and the two fish of Pisces.
Modality and compatibility
Signs of the same modality are always square or opposite each other on the zodiac wheel. Astrologers read this as a shared way of acting combined with different aims, which creates dynamic tension. See how any two signs combine.
